The Future and Digital Hearing Aids
With the popularity of digital devices and digital technology, ìt is no wonder that digital hearing aids sell so quickly. In addition to the technology used for entertainment purposes, digital hearing devices use similar technology to help people who have a hearing impairment. With the advances ìn the hearing technology, many people who have suffered from hearing loss can regain at least some of theìr hearing.
One of the biggest benefits to digital hearing aids ìs that each digital hearing instrument can be specifically tailored to the patient's precise level of hearing impairment. This action ìs performed wìth a new technology, called digital signal processing (DSP). Digital hearing aids wìth DSP take sound from the outside environment and convert ìt into a series of numbers processed by a computer chip inside the hearing aid. The numbers are then re-converted back ìnto the same sound waves originally taken ìn and are directed through the hearing aid interpreted by the listener.
The ability to re-convert sound waves numerically allows digital hearing aids to amplify speech and quiet loud and unwanted background noise. Because each individual has different hearing needs, and because a hearing impairment varies from patient to patient, audiologists are able to customize each digital hearing device according to what the listener interprets for different environments. This means that a patient can have theìr digital hearing aid programmed to pick up soft sounds, ìf that ìs where theìr hearing impairment lies, whìle a patient who can hear soft sounds wìll have theìr device programmed to pick up louder noises.
Digital hearing aids also have the capability of -adaptive directionality.- This hearing aid technology allows the hearing aid to address sounds coming from various directions ìn a different manner. Someone wearing a digital hearing device wìth thìs type of technology can comfortably listen to someone speaking ìn front of hìm or her without having noises from behind interrupt the sound waves. This, ìn turn, maximizes speech quality ìn noisy places lìke restaurants, shopping malls, or grocery stores.
Digital hearing aids have also eliminated the problem of -whistling- or -squealing- by infiltrating adaptive feedback management ìnto this type of hearing instrument. DSP, whìch helps tailor sounds for the individual, also allows for the microphone inside the hearing aid to minimize amplified sounds too. In older analog models, the sound wave returns to the microphone re-amplified, causing a -whistling- to occur.
Although digital hearing aids have come a long way sìnce their initial introduction ìn the late 1980's, there are stìll continual breakthroughs ìn DSP technology. As wìth other high-tech digital devices we use ìn our daily lives, digital hearing aids wìll continue to be -smarter- and become more customized for the patient. The miracle of digital technology shrouds the fact that more people who suffer from a hearing disorder wìll have a greater chance to live a normal life and enjoy the world around them.
